Wild tigers could become extinct in 12 years if countries where they still roam fail to take quick action to protect their habitats and step up the fight against poaching, global wildlife experts told a "tiger summit" on Sunday.
The World Wildlife Fund and other experts say only about 3,200 tigers remain in the wild, a dramatic plunge from an estimated 100,000 a century ago.

James Leape, director general of the World Wildlife Fund, told the meeting in St. Petersburg that if the proper protective measures aren't taken, tigers may disappear by 2022, the next Chinese calendar year of the tiger.

The four-day summit that opened Sunday is hosted by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who has adroitly used encounters with tigers and other wildlife to bolster his image.

The Global Tiger Recovery Program estimates the countries will need about $US350 million ($355 million) in outside funding in the first five years of the 12-year plan. The summit will be seeking donor commitments to help governments finance conservation measures.
The summit plans to approve a wide-ranging program aimed at doubling the world's tiger population in the wild by 2022.

(CBS) Every spring, blue skies in Michoacán, Mexico, turn orange. For centuries, millions of monarchs have gathered in these same ancient forests, traveling from as far away as Maine, North Dakota, and even Canada. They weigh just a fifth of a penny, but so many flapping wings can sound like falling rain.

There are an estimated 250 million monarchs that winter in this preserve. That sounds like a lot - and it certainly looks like a lot, but imagine 15 years ago when there were nearly one billion. The problem is giant fir trees where monarchs huddle for warmth are being cut down.

Without cover, millions of butterflies often freeze to death - in an average year, up to 15 percent. But this year, bad weather killed more than 50 percent.

Right now, we're inside a protected area of about 140,000 acres that the Mexican government set aside as a preserve for the monarch butterflies. Still, inside this zone, every year, more than 100,000 trees are cut down.

Mexico recently lost nearly 7 percent of its forests, an area twice the size of New Jersey, much of it from illegal logging. Deforestation threatens more than butterflies, as it destroys watersheds which can cause mudslides. One five miles from a butterfly sanctuary killed 17 people.

"'I have my mom,'" agent Dave Baden recalled Rochette saying to him at the time. "'At this point, I know what to do, and I have my mother.'"

"She's been training for this all her life, so the only thing she needed to get to that next level was the strength she got from her mother," Baden said.

That strength, he said, is helping her pull through the Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia, even though her mother is now gone.
Therese Rochette died Sunday of a heart attack in Vancouver at age 55, Canadian Olympic officials said. Joannie Rochette opted to stay in the games, and two days later stirred a crowd with a courageous performance that earned the third best score in the women's short program.

The topic of Manning's place in history has heated up in the wake of the Colts punching their ticket to another Super Bowl. While everyone agrees Manning already is among the NFL's greatest QBs and that his stature will only improve if he gets an a second Lombardi Trophy, few are ready to take the big leap I am. Here are the reasons I think Manning, with a win Sunday, will cement his place as the best to play the game in my lifetime.

The only two men who really challenge Manning, again assuming he wins Sunday, are Joe Montana and Tom Brady. Both were incredible leaders who put up astounding numbers at times while seemingly willing their teams to multiple Super Bowl titles. Montana may have been the most clutch performer ever; his postseason success is almost unprecedented. He did, however, play in an era before the advent of free agency and the salary cap. That's not his fault, of course, but it does help explain why he accomplished what he did, benefitting from immensely talented rosters that other teams couldn't raid.

I had the chance to play with Brady and never played with any other quarterback who was even close to his skill level. But Brady's injury, and Manning's continued dominance, have me thinking Peyton Manning is the better quarterback. He used to have issues with 3-4 defenses -- that is why his playoff record hasn't been sterling -- but he appears to have figured it out, shredding both blitz-heavy schemes and 3-4s at an amazing rate this year. The scary thing is he really appears to be getting better. That means there is a chance two or three years from now this subject is not even up for discussion.

Los Angeles, California (CNN) -- Dr. Conrad Murray expects to surrender to Los Angeles authorities this week on charges relating to the death of Michael Jackson, his lawyer said Tuesday.
"Dr. Murray is more than ready to surrender and answer to any charges," attorney Ed Chernoff said.
Prosecutors have not announced any charges, however, and Murray has not been told how or where he should surrender, according to Miranda Sevcik, spokeswoman for Murray's legal team.
Murray traveled to Los Angeles from his home in Houston, Texas, last week in anticipation of possible charges, which he expects to be announced within 24 to 48 hours, Sevick said.
Murray was hired to be Jackson's personal physician last spring as the entertainer prepared for his comeback concerts set for London, England, starting in July.
The doctor told Los Angeles Police investigators that he was with Jackson through the early morning hours of June 25 in an effort to help the pop star fall asleep, according to a police affidavit.Murray told investigators he had given Jackson three anti-anxiety drugs to help him sleep in the hours before he stopped breathing, a police affidavit said.
Murray had been treating Jackson for insomnia for six weeks at the time of the singer's death. He told investigators he gave Jackson 50 milligrams of propofol, the generic name for Diprivan, diluted with the anesthetic lidocaine every night via an intravenous drip.
Murray told police he was worried that Jackson was becoming addicted to the drug and tried to wean him off it.
During the two nights before Jackson's death, Murray said, he put together combinations of other drugs that succeeded in helping Jackson sleep.

PASADENA — Lucy Lawless used a lot of sweat and swordplay to become a female action hero in “Xena: Warrior Princess.” She didn’t mind the swords.She sweated her way through countless action scenes for six years before turning to less physical — and more modern — roles in “Battlestar Galactica,” “Two and a Half Men,” “CSI: Miami” and “The L Word.”
Lawless has returned to the genre that brought her so much fame to star in the new Starz series “Spartacus: Blood and Sand.” It launches at 10 p.m. Friday.

Bodies are piling up in the streets of Haiti in the aftermath of an earthquake that has decimated the Caribbean island state. On the ground, survivors of the earthquake - measuring seven on the Richter scale - are struggling to save those still trapped under the rubble. At least a third of the population are now homeless - including the country's president. An estimated three million people will need emergency relief as aid organsations make their way to the scene. The Haitian Red Cross predicts an horrific death toll of around 50,000 while the World Health Organization predicts the sheer numbers of dead may lead to an outbreak of disease.

Haiti's devastating earthquake has left an estimated 3 million people in need of emergency aid, a Red Cross official said Wednesday, as aid groups and governments scrambled to send tons of disaster relief to the impoverished Caribbean nation.

Humanitarian officials said the proximity of the quake's epicenter, only 10 miles (15 kilometers) from the capital Port-au-Prince, and Haiti's crumbling infrastructure meant it was impossible to gauge exactly how many people might be dead or wounded.
The first airlifts to Haiti concentrated on search and rescue efforts and setting up makeshift hospitals.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the United States was offering full assistance — civilian and military. Prime Minister Gordon Brown said Britain would provide "whatever humanitarian assistance is required," while France, Canada, China, Germany, Mexico and Venezuela pledged immediate support in terms of personnel, cash and supplies.
Germany said it would donate euro1 million ($1.45 million), while China pledged $1 million.
One of the first teams expected to arrive Wednesday was 37 search and rescue specialists from Iceland, who are bringing with them 10 tons of their own equipment.
French rescue authorities say 65 clearing specialists and 6 sniffer dogs are leaving for Haiti on Wednesday, while Spain is rushing three airplanes to Haiti with at least 100 tons of tents, blankets and cooking kits. Israel is sending in an elite Army rescue unit of engineers and medics.

U.N. agencies and Red Cross societies were trying to send in teams and aid from their regional hub in Panama, while USAID is mobilizing a response group and two urban search and rescue units, Byrs said.

If aid cannot travel over the airport road, assistance may be rerouted through the Dominican Republic, said Charles Vincent, a senior World Food Program official, whose agency plans to airlift tons of high-energy biscuits from El Salvador, enough to feed 30,000 people for a week.

The Christian aid organization World Vision, which has 400 staff in Haiti, said it would immediately distribute supplies it had stored in Haiti for hurricane relief.
Low-lying areas of Port-au-Prince, including the Cite Soleil slum, appeared to be hit worse than neighborhoods higher up the hills, said World Vision spokesman Casey Calamusa.

Dozens of Al-Qaeda jihadists are hiding out in a remote area of Yemen, a top official said, as President Ali Abdullah Saleh on Sunday urged militants in the conflict-ridden country to lay down their arms.
Al-Qaeda fighters, among them Saudis and Egyptians, have streamed in from Afghanistan and have joined local members of the jihadist network in lairs carved out in the rugged Kour mountain in southern Shabwa province, said provincial governor Ali Hasan al-Ahmadi.
"There are dozens of Saudi and Egyptian Al-Qaeda militants who came to the province," Ahmadi told the London-based Al-Sharq Al-Awsat daily.Among them, he added, are the leader of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) Nasser al-Wahishi, his number two, Saeed Ali al-Shehri, a Saudi, and radical US-Yemeni cleric Anwar al-Awlaqi.
The Egyptians and Saudis, Ahmadi said, had travelled to Yemen from Afghanistan.
AQAP group has claimed it was behind the botched Christmas Day bomb attack onboard a US airliner, while Yemeni officials have said the would-be bomber, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, had been in contact with Awlaqi.
The United States has accused the Al-Qaeda branch in Yemen of training Abdulmutallab, who tried to blow up a Northwest Airline flight before it landed in Detroit, but was overpowered by passengers.On Wednesday, Yemeni officials announced the capture of key Qaeda leader Mohammed al-Hanq and two other militants believed behind threats against Western interests in Sanaa that caused embassies to close for several days.
Yemen insists it can win the war against the militants without US military intervention, but analysts fear Osama bin Laden's ancestral homeland cannot tackle the jihadists on its own.
